Carlos Pesudo – It Doesn’t Belong to Us
Solo Exhibition
17.08.2021 2 pm - 28.08.2021 7 pm
Between August 17 and 28 2021, SomoS presents It Doesn’t Belong to Us, a solo exhibition by SomoS resident artist Carlos Pesudo (1992, Castellón). Working in abstract painting, installation, and video, Pesudo thematizes the artistic process itself.
Aesthetically and philosophically referencing the legacies of Spanish Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, and Zero, Pesudo connects these art-historical traditions with contemporary influences from the urban environment, the city’s rough surfaces and graphic language, giving his works an urgent, impulsive, and unfinished character.
In this exhibition, created during a 4-month artist residency at SomoS in spring/summer 2021, Pesudo presents a series of enigmatic large-scale abstract oil paintings, accompanied by a video piece, in which he applies his painterly sensibility to the creation of equally inscrutable moving imagery, using macro lenses to capture the invisible processes that take place in the artist’s studio.
It Doesn’t Belong to Us is the latest phase in a set of workgroups in which the artist reflects on the process of art creation itself, tracing its sequential phases, from the contemplative and isolated gestation phase to the urgent and impulsive formulation of an aesthetic language, to a work’s eventual interaction with the world.

As the show’s title suggests, the exhibited artworks defy interpretation and appropriation. Abstract, yet hinting at figuration, they feature otherworldly shapes, vaguely familiar, yet not placeable. In contrast to Pesudo’s works of the previous phases of this workgroup, where he used more geometric, lightly-rendered, and flat shapes and muted colors, his latest works come alive with vibrant colors, adding volume, and depth while still preserving their ambiguous and hermetic nature. In It Doesn’t Belong to Us, the forms seem to free themselves from the canvas, floating away, perhaps suggesting how no work of art really belongs to the artist or anyone else after it leaves the studio.
