Iria Do Castelo – Fantastic Beings

Sculpture & Assemblage Workshop

07.03.2020 11am -  08.03.2020 5pm

In the Fantastic Beings workshop, Spanish multidisciplinary artist Iria do Castelo teaches how to build a human-like sculpture using plaster bandages, homemade papier-mâché, clay and found objects. The workshop is designed to give an opportunity for participants to improve their creative process and explore new paths of sculpture and assemblage together with an established and experienced artist.

Conducted in English and suitable for anyone, artist or not, from 18 and above. All materials will be provided, but participants are also encouraged to bring along curious objects that they may wish to incorporate into their sculptures. Registration is required.

Iria do Castelo presents the workshop as a way to highlight the imaginative opportunities that are possible when sculpture, assemblage and the body come together. Inspired by Gothic art, eroticism, dreams and the dark depths of the human psyche, in her own work, do Castelo creates perverse and disruptive settings in which sculpture draws on emotion rather than formal rules. What often emerges from do Castelo’s creative process are fantastical creatures that bear resemblance to human figures. With do Castelo as a guide and teacher, participants of the Fantastic Beings workshop will be led to replicate their own bodies, transforming their moulds into new non-human, biomorphic compositions with the aid of assemblage techniques.

About Iria do Castelo:

Iria do Castelo’s installations draw from the hidden tensions and impulses of human’s psychology. She uses the body and the unconscious perception that we have of it, as a starting point, materializing it into sculpture. Looking at eroticism as the very unique way to approach the physical limits and the animal condition of the human body, do Castelo’s work draws on emotion rather than formal rules.

In 2012, do Castelo graduated with a Masters in Graphic Design from Fundación CIEC. A Coruña, Spain and is represented by galleries in Spain, Hong Kong and Melbourne. She has exhibited extensively in a number of solo shows, group exhibitions and art fairs internationally. Her work has been featured at MAC Contemporary Art Museum in Coruña, Spain. She has participated in Art Madrid, Swab Art Fair Barcelona and Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong.
