Scope Sessions #76

artist talks & media salon

11.10.2018 6pm -  9pm

Pascal Glissmann, Michael Reiley McDermott, and the Patchlab Digital Art Festival

The Scope Sessions are a meeting point for the creative and the curious, a platform for sharing and learning in an informal setting. Guest artists are invited to present a project, a concept, a process or an experience. The presentations are short, around 40 minutes and unrestricted in form. Each session offers a variety of topics and approaches; Scope is about exposure, not for the artist, but for the audience.

In this 76th edition of “Scope Sessions – artist talks & media salon,” taking place at SomoS, artists Pascal Glissmann and Michael Reiley McDermott demonstrate and discuss their work. In an online live presentation, Digital Art Festival Patchlab will be represented by production coordinator Karolina Paluch.

Pascal Glissmann

Pascal Glissmann is a designer, media artist, and educator based in New York who is currently one of the Artists In Residency at SomoS Art House. His research-driven artmaking explores the increasingly osmotic membrane between the natural and the artificial. Looking at artifacts, do we apply the same methodologies of observation we use for natural objects? His research project “electronic-life-forms” — in collaboration with Martina Hoefflin — inhabits the intersection of art, science, and technology to explore the fascination for artificial life and its principles through site-specific installations.

Michael Reiley McDermott

Michael Reiley McDermott is a composer, musician, coder and sound designer. He has created works for video, dance, stage, installation, smartphones, multi-speaker arrays, wind sculptures, wishing wells and sleeping/dreaming. His work explores the relationship between the present moment’s awareness, deep time and humanity’s personal connection through listening. His work integrates a daily routine of meditation, Deep Listening and textured sound worlds through a process he calls “sonic photography.” He will perform one of his pieces during his presentation.

Patchlab Digital Art Festival

Held in Krakow since 2012, the Patchlab Digital Art Festival is an annual art event based on new technologies and new media arts. Its makers are interested in the creative potential of machines, algorithms, programming and databases. Patchlab explores key phenomena in contemporary culture and art, including VR, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, hacking and digital identities. In an online live presentation, Patchlab will be represented by production coordinator Karolina Paluch.
